Skrillex is the Nickleback of Dubstep.

Dubstep is the new Hardcore

Just searched dubstep on Tumblr just for shits and giggles, and it’s pretty much been taken over by kids who 5 years ago were emo, 4 years ago scene, 3 years ago hxc…now they’re into dubstep….

It’s whatever. I know I sound like some hipster music douchebag that’s pissed because it’s not “underground” any more. No that’s not really it. It’s the fact that none of these kids even understand what Dubstep was about. They don’t know what DJ culture, turntablism, electronic music, Detroit, Chicago, London, etc mean to anything musically. The saddest thing is that for most of the people that like Dubstep they identify it with Sonny Moore and complete utter bullshit like that.

It would be the equivalent of me buying tons of Nickelback and telling some rock kids I know their music. Skrillex is absolute shit, he doesn’t innovate anything. Skrillex is the Nickleback of Dubstep.  All his shit sounds the same, and there’s a very generic quality to his music which I can only compare to hearing good rock and then listening to Nickleback. Nickleback are that band that sound like someone played a lot of great rock albums for them and they just tried to take what they thought sounded “good.” That to me is all Skrillex is. He just heard some dubstep, heard it was the new ‘shit’ and just copied it. His music lacks soul and depth. All good music, no matter the genre relies on both imo.

Also, his “live” sets are a joke, they are all just triggered pre-recorded tracks he’s playing. He and Deadmau5 are a joke when it comes to playing “live.” Neither one are actually performing live (like acts like Soulwax, Justice, Chemical Brothers, etc do) or DJ’ing.  It’s basically the equivalent of pressing “next” on itunes and kids are paying 30 bucks to watch them do it. The reason I bring it up is because an actual artist would try to do more.  They aren’t artists, they’re just snake oil salesman cashing in on the latest fad.

Anyway, Dubstep was about something evolving, being new and different, but at the same time, just the logical progression after drum and bass, grime, etc. To ignore that is to not understand what Dubstep was/is.  I say was because most everyone’s moved on from that sound now. This is a pointless rant, the people that understand it, have already moved on. I don’t even tell people I play dubstep if they ask about what I spin (which ranges from chillwave, to hip hop, to house, to whatever) because I know I’ll get some dumbass response about Skrillex. Anyway.
